I've been concentrating on another project since 2018 which is still a long way from being finished, so updates on this site are a long way off. However, my database has a huge amount of information on many of the servicemen listed which I have yet to write up. If you see a name you want to know more about, please do get in touch and I'll be happy to share any information I have.
Chris at CottinghamSoldiershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04668424861016926529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1115076132596415332.post-89558298873094583482017-10-15T06:07:00.003-07:002017-10-15T06:07:56.363-07:00October 2017I've just begun writing up entries on the thirty three servicemen belonging to the extended Crane family. This going to take awhile, to put it mildly. I've also been adding more people to the database - it's startling how many new names turn up. Then there are always newly released sources of information to investigate to discover possible new details for existing entries. So please don't think I've got bored with the project because the website isn't updated very often - it's just very time consuming work.

Serendipity is a wonderful thing. We visited Highgate Cemetery in July and by sheer chance came across the gravestone of Alfred Aldwinckle on our way out. He was father to a couple of the Aldwinckles with entries on the website, and I'd no idea that's where he was buried. Chris at CottinghamSoldiershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04668424861016926529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1115076132596415332.post-76240766725527064062017-03-15T09:41:00.001-07:002017-03-15T09:41:18.600-07:002017 updateIt's been a while since I wrote a blog, but that's not to say I've not been doing research. Since all the Aldwinckle information was uploaded, I've been adding many more names to my soldiers database. Mostly they are descendants of Cottingham families already identified, and are thus scattered across the UK and in several cases a long way outside it, mainly in Australia and Canada. It takes a lot of time to write up each entry for the website, so if you recognise a name on the list with no link yet to further information, please feel free to contact me. I will probably be able to tell you more. Chris at CottinghamSoldiershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04668424861016926529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1115076132596415332.post-25990096159930675542015-11-09T06:07:00.000-08:002015-11-09T06:07:23.529-08:00Nine more histories have been added, all relating to the Lines family. They are:
Frederick A Lines
Henry W Lines
Owen Lines
William G Scott
Ernest R V Cowley
Albert Bazeley
Edwin W Bazeley
Walter Frank Bazeley
Arthur Bazeley

As always, the experiences of each serviceman vary more than you might expect and each has his own story. This group includes an underage marine and a prisoner of war who died four days before the war ended. I have also been adding information onto my database on several men who were born in Cottingham but moved away well before 1914. One of them emigrated to Australia and may be the oldest serviceman so far found, enlisting one month short of his forty fifth birthday.
recent additions to the website concern the Binley family. I am indebted to
Janice Binley of Cottingham (strangely enough Janice now lives in the house
once occupied by my grandparents) who has generously shared her information
with me. I have done further research into relatives and descendants of the
Cottingham Binleys so in all there are thirteen new histories to read. Janice
has also written an account of her family's antecedents which is published at
www.craxfordfamily.co.uk. This fascinating website has a wealth of information
on local families including an account of Barrack Yard co-written by
Janice.

I've been busy adding information on several newly identified servicemen with Cottingham connections onto my database but the priority for January is adding to and amending information on servicemen already uploaded onto the website. In particular a lot of new information on the military career of William Coles has recently been published on findmypast - my thanks to Amanda Taylor for notifying me.
The organisers did a brilliant job and I'm very grateful to them all for inviting me. There will be a repeat of the exhibition in November at the Methodist Church.

I've acquired lots of new information, much of it from Janice Binley who has been very generous with sharing her research. I've also been provided with Corby Borough Council's list of people in the relevant parishes who served in and survived WW1; some of them known to me but not yet researched, others whom I didn't know about. All in all, there's a lot of work yet to be done, but what are long winter nights for, if not slaving over a hot computer?

24th August seems a long time ago. We've been helping look after our small grandchildren and have only just got home again, somewhat weary, but hopefully I shall be revving up for the next wave of soldiers within a day or two. Maybe three.

Chris at CottinghamSoldiershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04668424861016926529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1115076132596415332.post-58688516699349202042014-08-13T06:11:00.001-07:002014-08-13T06:11:29.233-07:00It's been an exceptionally busy few weeks on the domestic front, so opportunities for Soldiering On have been brief. However, this week sees the William Coles history going public. It's one of the longest so far, mainly because there was some very interesting family background to be unearthed.

In just over a week the World War One exhibition is happening in Cottingham; details at htpp://cottinghamnews.co.uk/news.htm. I've been exchanging information with Janice Binley, and am particularly excited to learn that one of the medals to be exhibited belonged to the only man named on the Cottingham war memorial to whom I'm related. Edwin (known as Edward) Towndrow was married to my great aunt Frances Bamford for five months before his death at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle on 13 March 1915. (William) James Tansley was killed on the same day, both men being in the 2nd Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment.

I have a good deal of information on both men as much of their military record survives. Unfortunately their histories are unlikely to be ready for uploading before the exhibition on 24 August, but I should have them finished in the autumn.

I am really looking forward to seeing people's family memorabilia on display and hoping to learn a lot more about Cottingham's soldiers from the families who remember them. It should be a great day.Chris at CottinghamSoldiershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04668424861016926529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1115076132596415332.post-48330167996490269302014-06-24T11:27:00.002-07:002014-06-24T11:28:43.970-07:00WW1 event at Cottingham<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

Annie Johnson has generously sent me excerpts from family
WW1 letters that mention certain soldiers from the village. This is exactly the
sort of detail that adds colour to what can seem a very bald account of
someone’s experiences, and I am very grateful to her. If anybody else has
letters or family anecdotes that they’d be willing to share, I would love to
hear from them too.

So far I've identified just over seventy men from Cottingham and nearby who served during WW1. There's not very much detail yet for many of them but I hope to find out more as new sources of information become available online.

I'll be giving updates and listing any interesting new websites here.

If you've got anything you want to share about WW1 soldiers in your family, please do get in touch: cottinghamsoldiers@gmail.org.uk

The next men to be added to the website will be Frederick Oliver and Alfred William Inchley. Chris at CottinghamSoldiershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04668424861016926529noreply@blogger.com0
